Children from Castro Marim went to Altura to learn that fishing is for them too

The youngest ones had the opportunity to learn about the history of the oldest activity in the municipality, fishing

“Fishing is also for children” was the name of the activity developed by the Association of Artisanal and Recreational Fishing at Altura (APALA), during a morning during the Easter period, with the participation of children integrated into the Castro Marim Active Holidays program.

Through a visit to the APALA headquarters, in Altura, the youngest children had the opportunity to learn about the history of the oldest activity in the municipality, fishing.

Fishing gear, the main precautions to be taken, its surrounding terms, the marine species of the Algarve coast and even the sustainable aspect of fishing were topics covered with the greatest emphasis.

The children had the opportunity to «share their ideas about the world of fishing and also contributed to several debates between older and younger fishermen», explains APALA.

«The creation of these dynamics allows for a strong appreciation for this topic among children», adds the association.

APALA aims to «contribute to the pedagogical aspect of the municipality» and «transmit the knowledge of fishermen» its members to the youngest, considering that this is «a very important investment for the development of the municipality».

APALA had the support of Castro Marim City Council, «as a way of highlighting the legacy that remains alive, fishing in Altura».
