Couples with both unemployed increase 5,6% in March to more than 5 thousand

According to the Institute of Employment and Professional Training

The number of couples with both members unemployed increased by 5,6% in March year-on-year, but fell by 0,7% compared to the previous month, to 5.032, according to the Institute of Employment and Professional Training (IEFP).

«Of the total number of unemployed people married or in a civil union, 10.064 (8,1%) also have a record that their spouse is also registered as unemployed with the employment service, totaling 5.032 unemployed couples, in March 2024, which represents + 5,6%, when compared to the same period of the previous year», states the IEFP in the statistical information released, with data relating to mainland Portugal.

Couples in this situation of double unemployment are entitled to a 10% increase in the amount of the unemployment benefit, when they have dependents.

«At the end of March 2024, 312.181 unemployed people were registered with the continent's employment services, of which 39,9% were married or living in a de facto union, making a total of 124.661», the IEFP also indicates.

Unemployment registered on the continent increased by 7,2% compared to the same period last year and decreased by 3,2% compared to the previous month.

Regarding the total number of unemployed people who are married or in a civil partnership, there is an increase of 4,5% (5.369 unemployed) compared to March 2023 and a decrease of 1,9% (-2.359) compared to February.
