The Portimão City Council will declare a day of municipal mourning due to the death this Sunday, March 17th, of the Algarve poet Nuno Júdice, born in Mexilhoeira Grande.
The mourning will take place on the day of the funeral ceremonies, the date of which is still unknown.
In a vote of regret, the Portimão Chamber recalls that Nuno Júdice was born in 1949, in Mexilhoeira Grande.
«His vast poetic work, begun in 1972 with “A Noção de Poem”, includes more than 20 books, distinguished by its originality, formal rigor and reflection on the human condition. His poetry is marked by a rich and sensorial language, exploring themes such as memory, time, love, death and travel », we also read.
«He was the most internationally recognized Portuguese poet: in 2013, he was awarded the XXII Queen Sofia Prize for Ibero-American Poetry (Spain); in 2014, with the Poetas del Mundo Latino Víctor Sandoval Poetry Prize (Mexico); in 2015, with the Argana Poetry Prize, from the Maison de la Poésie of Morocco, and the Inês de Castro Foundation Literary Prize – Tribute of Consecration, among many other distinctions», he adds.
In addition to his poetic work, Nuno Júdice dedicated himself to fiction, essays, translation, higher education and served as cultural advisor at the Portuguese Embassy in Paris, where he also directed the Camões Institute.
On June 10, 1992, he was awarded the rank of Officer of the Military Order of Sant'Iago da Espada and, on June 7, 2013, he was elevated to Grand Officer of the same order.
Likewise, in 2001, the Municipality of Portimão awarded Nuno Júdice the Municipal Merit Medal – Gold Degree.
