“Tours in the History of Tavira” lead to the Church of São José do Hospital

Anyone who wants to participate can register until March 21st

The Municipal Museum promotes, within the scope of the “Tours in the History of Tavira” program, a guided visit to the Church of São José do Hospital, under the guidance of Marco Sousa Santos, art historian of the Municipality, on March 23rd, at 10:30 am .

The origins of the Church of São José date back to the medieval period. Of the original temple, rebuilt in the middle of the 18th century, according to an ambitious project by Diogo Tavares de Ataíde, only a 16th century chapel remains, with a ribbed vault decorated with heraldic elements alluding to the Costa and Melo families», highlights the Tavira municipality in a note .

Inside, the altarpieces and images from the 18th century will be highlighted, as well as the main chapel altarpiece, an unusual example of trompe l'oeil painting.

“Tours in the History of Tavira” aim to provide insight into the past of the city and the municipality, the landscape, the monuments and historical characters, as well as raising awareness of the need to protect and enhance the heritage.

The visit is restricted to 30 people and anyone who wants to participate can register until March 21st, through this link.
