Portimão parishes celebrate Easter with religious ceremonies and shows

Between the 23st and 31th of March

Eucharists, Easter vigils, processions, Stations of the Cross and shows are some of the initiatives that the parishes of Portimão are promoting to celebrate Easter, between the 23rd and 31st of March. 

The ceremonies will take place at the Parish Church of Portimão, Parish of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Parish Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo, Parish of Nossa Senhora da Assunção in Mexilhoeira Grande, Churches in Alvor, Montes de Cima and Penina, and Parish of Divino Salvador de Alvor, in addition to the Vicariate of Pedra Mourinha.

The celebration of Holy Week begins on Saturday, March 23rd, with a Eucharist in Montes de Alvor, at 17:30 pm, and another in Alvor, at 19:00 pm, the latter with the particularity of being celebrated in English.

However, the Procession and Blessing of the Palms will take place, either in the Parish Church of Portimão, or from
of the Parish Center of Nossa Senhora do Amparo, in the Church in Alvor and in the towns of Mexilhoeira Grande, Figueira and Alcalar, which gains greater relevance on Palm Sunday, marked on March 24th.

This year there are also new features in the Parish of Nossa Senhora do Amparo, with the holding of a cycle of three shows in the areas of music, cinema, dance and poetry, entitled “Arte do Amparo”, between the 25th and 27th of March, always at 21pm.

The vast program also highlights the celebration of Maundy Thursday, on the 28th of March, with the Mass of the Lord's Supper and the rite of washing of the feet, at 19:00 pm, at the Main Church of Portimão, at 19:30 pm, at the Matriz da Mexilhoeira Grande, and at 21pm, at the Igreja do Divino Salvador in Alvor.

Also at 21 pm, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo celebrates this Eucharist, followed by Adoration with Songs of Taizé.

 

 

On Good Friday, the 29th, the Procession of the Burial of the Lord will be one of the highlights of the celebration of the death and Resurrection of Christ.

Thus, from 21pm onwards, the image of the Dead Lord will pass through several streets in the center of Portimão, at the
sound of rattles.

The Procession will start at the Colégio Church and will travel along 5 de Outubro and Serpa Pinto streets, then through Jardim 1º de Outubro, Rua Direita and Rua Manuel Barão, towards Praça da República (Alameda), ending at the Igreja Matriz.

On the same day, the Stations of the Cross take place, either at Quinta do Amparo, at 15pm, or in Mexilhoeira Grande, at 00pm, or in Montes de Alvor, at 17pm.

Holy Saturday will be filled with Easter vigils that begin at 21:30 pm at the Main Church of Portimão, the Main Church of Mexilhoeira Grande and the Church of Alvor, and at 22:00 pm the vigil will take place at the Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo.

 

 

The celebration of Holy Week ends on Easter Sunday, March 31st, with the Eucharist of the Lord in the Main Church of Portimão, at 10 am, followed by the Procession of the Resurrection of Jesus in the main arteries of the city center.

The Parish invites the faithful to carry a bouquet of flowers and place quilts on the windows and balconies of the houses where the route passes, similar to the Procession of the Burial of the Lord.

In the city of Portimão, Easter Mass is also scheduled to be celebrated at the Church of Nossa Senhora do Amparo, at 10:00 am, while at the Capela de Santa Catarina, in Praia da Rocha, this Eucharist begins at 12:15 pm.

In the Divino Salvador Parish, celebrations will take place from 9:00 am, in Alvor, from 12:00 pm, at the Church of Santo André, in Penina, and from 17:00 pm in Montes de Alvor.

In turn, in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, Easter visits, with the celebration of mass, take place at 9:30 am, in Figueira, at 11:00 am, in Mexilhoeira Grande, at 15:00 pm, in Montes de Cima, at 16:30 pm, in Pereira, and at 18:00 pm , in the chapel of the Village of São José de Alcalar.

Alongside the liturgical celebrations, the Municipality also highlights the offer of entertainment for the period between March 23rd and April 7th, under the motto “Live Easter in Portimão 2024”, through which attraction spaces will be recreated in the city, which combine tradition with the joy of the Easter season.

In a note, the Municipality of Portimão states that the objective of these initiatives is to invite residents and visitors to travel to various emblematic areas in the city, such as the center, so that they can experience these experiences.
