History Days of Baixo Guadiana return to VRSA and go to Ayamonte

Program opens with a conference by Algarve historian Fernando Pessanha

The Baixo Guadiana History Days return to the António Rosa Mendes Municipal Historical Archive, in Vila Real de Santo António, on Friday, March 22, from 9:30 am.

In this 2nd session of the IXth edition of the conferences, the program opens with the conference by the Algarve historian Fernando Pessanha, entitled “Piracy in the vicinity of the Guadiana: from the Middle Ages to the sunset of the Modern Age”, followed by the conference “Defensive Architecture in mouth of the Guadiana: Vila Real de Santo António, Ayamonte and Castro Marim”, by María Martin Ríos, from the University of Seville.

In the afternoon, the program continues with the boat crossing to Ayamonte and the visit to the Casa Grande da Cultura, where archaeologist Benjamín Cabaco will display some archaeological materials from excavations carried out over the last few years.

The Baixo Guadiana History Days, which, in 2024, mark 10 years of existence, have already offered fifty conferences given by researchers, university teachers, heritage technicians and Portuguese and Spanish editors, in addition to more than 25 guided visits to sites of historical and heritage interest and the publication of a book of minutes, which collects some of the conferences given.

Inserted in the cultural program of Eurocidade do Guadiana, they are organized by the António Rosa Mendes Municipal Historical Archive / Vila Real de Santo António Municipal Council. Participation in the Days is free, but subject to prior registration via e-mail [email protected] or telephone 281 510 260.
