End of Regional Health Administrations approved by Council of Ministers

The end of the five ARS began on January 1, 2024

The extinction of the Regional Health Administrations (ARS) was approved today by the Council of Ministers, placing the «last piece of a reorganization reform» of the Ministry of Health, which generalized Local Health Units.

The end of the five ARS began on January 1, 2024 and the diploma establishing their extinction was approved today, at the penultimate meeting of the Council of Ministers of the outgoing Government.

The Minister of the Presidency, Mariana Vieira da Silva, explained that the decree-law that abolishes the ARS is «the last piece of a reform to reorganize the Ministry of Health, which included the creation of the Executive Directorate».

This new model, in force since the beginning of the year, «guarantees the coherence and efficiency of the system through a more reinforced and more capable organizational model and with more skills in managing the provision of health care to citizens», said Mariana Vieira da Silva.

With the end of the ARS, its operational functions were transferred to the Local Health Units.
