Gastronomy, but also poetry, music, painting and sculpture. The “Terra do Atum” festival takes place from the 17th to the 25th of February, in Vila Real de Santo António.

The program offers a series of activities that promise to involve residents and visitors in a festive and educational environment that aims to value the cultural heritage and fishing tradition rooted in the city's history.

At the opening ceremony, scheduled for February 17th, in the Noble Hall of the VRSA City Council, participants will have the opportunity to witness the twinning of the Tuna Confraternity of VRSA with the Spanish counterpart «Cofradía del Bonito del Norte de Colindres» , located in Cantabria.

The «Land of Tuna» includes several cultural moments, such as poetry, music, painting and sculpture, scheduled for the António Aleixo Cultural Center, in VRSA, on February 22nd (free entry). Also between the 22nd and 25th, Praça Marquês de Pombal will be a meeting and socializing point with several stands and taverns that will give you the opportunity to taste various delicacies made from tuna.

On the 23rd, the Noble Hall of the VRSA City Council will once again host several informative panels on «Tuna and its history» and «Tuna and its production», in addition to a presentation by the «Associação dos Profissionais da Arte do Chá of Macau”.

The highlight of the festival will be on the 24th, with the X Chapter of the Confraria do Atum de Vila Real de Santo António. The ceremony takes place at the António Aleixo Cultural Center, at 11 am. Before the chapter acts, the meeting includes two public moments: a reception at the VRSA School of Hotel Management and Tourism, as well as a parade of the invited fraternities through the streets of the Historic Center, starting at 00:10 am.

The procession will showcase the yellow and blue tones of the Vila Realense fraternity's costumes, colors that evoke the traditional uniforms of workers in the many canning factories that existed in the city of Guadiana.

The festival closes on the 25th with a panel dedicated to «Tuna and its Gastronomy», in the Noble Hall of the VRSA City Council.

The «Terra do Atum» Festival is the result of a partnership between the Municipal Council of VRSA and the Confraria do Atum de Vila Real de Santo António, an entity whose mission is to take the history of tuna and the canning industry further, episodes that have marked generations in VRSA and are still present today in many of the city's typical dishes or in the eating habits of Vila Real residents.
