Vila Real de Santo António wins Portuguese League Against Cancer hub

The facility operates on the premises of the municipality's Health and Social Intervention Division

Vila Real de Santo António already has a hub for the Portuguese League Against Cancer. The presentation took place this Friday, February 9th.

The facility operates on the premises of the municipality's Health and Social Intervention Division and aims to implement a set of actions in the primary and secondary prevention of oncological disease.

The ceremony was attended by the president of the Municipal Council of Vila Real de Santo António Álvaro Araújo, the member of the board of directors of the Regional Center of the South of the LPCC Luís Filipe Roma, the vice-president of the Municipal Council of VRSA Ricardo Cipriano and the councilor Fernando Vegetable garden.

The creation of this hub in Vila Real de Santo António allows residents to enjoy, more closely, the services that LPCC offers to cancer patients and their families.

An example of this is the reimbursement of medication, support for transport and technical aid, the provision of psycho-oncology consultations or legal support.

In the protocol act, Álvaro Araújo thanked «the work carried out by LPCC and the group of volunteers who provide support in the municipality», demonstrating all the City Council's commitment to the implementation and success of the project.

According to the director of volunteering at the Southern Regional Center of the LPCC, Luís Filipe Roma, «the objective of this center is to serve not only Vila Real de Santo António, but also all the neighboring municipalities of Baixo Guadiana, providing care to cancer patients in all sizes, even outside large urban centers».

In addition to the institution's technical team, the hub counts on the collaboration of a group of volunteers, residents of the municipality, who ensure greater proximity to the local population in responding to requests that may be addressed to the League. Volunteer service can be freely exercised by anyone who wishes to join the cause.

As part of the «Malha de Letras» project, an intergenerational meeting space for sharing knowledge, developed by the Vicente Campinas Municipal Library, a group of citizens makes weekly, on a voluntary basis, several breast implants and crochet toys that are later donated to cancer patients and children who benefit from LPCC support.

The Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC) provides fortnightly services, on Wednesdays, in Vila Real de Santo António, at the facilities of the Health and Social Intervention Division of the VRSA municipality, located in the Lutgarda Guimarães de Caires Building. Appointments can be made by calling 910 890 114 or 217 264 099.
