The 'lay-off' provided for in the Labor Code results in a temporary reduction of normal working periods or a suspension of employment contracts carried out at the initiative of companies in a crisis situation

Workers on lay-off more than tripled in January year-on-year, totaling 10.890, and the number of companies covered reached an all-time high, according to monthly statistics published by Social Security.

«In January 2024, the total number of 'lay-off' situations with remunerative compensation (normal concession, in accordance with the provisions of the Labor Code) was 10.890», indicates the summary prepared by the Strategy and Planning Office ( GEP) of the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security.

The number thus once again exceeded 10.000 in the first month of the year, after having registered a peak in November 2023, when 15.760 workers were on lay-off, according to the long series published by Social Security.

Compared to the same month last year, in January there was an increase of more than 200% (7.417 more benefits processed) of workers covered by this regime provided for in the Labor Code.

In monthly terms, growth was 11,3% (more 1.108 installments).

According to the GEP, the working hours reduction regime covered 5.948 people and the temporary contract suspension covered 4.942 workers.

These benefits were processed to 598 employers, the highest value since the beginning of the series made available by Social Security, starting in 2006.

In January there were 399 more employers than in the same month and 19 more compared to December.

The 'lay-off' provided for in the Labor Code results in a temporary reduction in normal working periods or a suspension of employment contracts carried out at the initiative of companies in a crisis situation.

According to labor law, workers on lay-off with a suspended contract are entitled to receive monthly compensation equal to two thirds of their normal gross salary, with a guarantee of a minimum equal to the value of the national minimum wage (820 euros in 2024) and a maximum corresponding to three times the minimum wage.
