PSP registered more than 336 thousand criminal complaints in the last two years

The 112 service received a total of 6.953.906 calls

The Public Security Police (PSP) registered more than 2022 thousand criminal complaints in the 2023-336 biennium, according to data released by the security force to mark European Day for Victims of Crime today.

In a statement, the PSP said that in 2023, the 112 service received a total of 6.953.906 calls.

«It is also important to mention that in the 2022-2023 biennium, the PSP registered more than 336 thousand criminal complaints, which had due support, monitoring and referral», is mentioned in the note.

These data are released today, the European Day of Victims of Crime, which was “created in 1990 in Stockholm by Victim Support Europe, with the purpose of raising awareness and alerting to the protection and safeguarding of the rights of victims of crime, as well as make known the available mechanisms that they can resort to, if they are victims of crime or have witnessed a crime, regardless of its nature».

The PSP provides more than two hundred locations nationally for filing complaints and supporting victims of crimes, among hundreds of police stations, 19 specialized service spaces dedicated to victims of domestic violence (especially vulnerable victims), four police stations located in the main hospitals in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and three Tourism Police Stations.

APAV – Portuguese Victim Support Association registered 30.950 crimes last year, the majority related to domestic violence and sexual crimes against children and young people.

According to data from APAV, released today in the Público newspaper, in the last five years, 6.776 sexual crimes against children and young people were registered, with 2023 being the year in which the most crimes of this type were reported, totaling 1.760 situations.

However, domestic violence crimes continue to dominate the majority of total crimes reported by APAV throughout 2023: 23.465 crimes of this type were flagged, representing 75,8% of the total 30.950 crimes reported.

APAV data, cited by Público and whose report will be released today, indicate that crimes related to sexual violence against minors (1.760) come next, representing 5,7% of reported crimes.

The 1.760 cases represent an increase of almost 30%, which translates into 404 situations, in the number of crimes against children recorded by APAV throughout 2022.
