Tavira Museum organizes visit to the Parish Church of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo

The Tavira Museum promotes, on February 17th, at 10:30 am, a guided tour of the Parish Church of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, under the guidance of Marco Sousa Santos, art historian from the Municipality.

Founded at the beginning of the 16th century (or even in the 15th century), the Parish Church of Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo is the seat of one of the oldest rural parishes in the region of Tavira. Inside the temple, dedicated to the martyr Saint Catherine of Alexandria, there is an interesting and varied artistic collection that testifies to more than five centuries of history.

Worthy of note are the terracotta image of the patron saint (now removed from worship), dating back to the beginning of the 16th century, and the 19th century image of Our Lady of Sorrows, an object of special devotion among the people of Santa Catarina, to whom the main religious festival is dedicated. of the parish.

“Tours in the History of Tavira” aim to provide insight into the past of the city and the municipality, the landscape, the monuments and historical characters, as well as raising awareness of the need to protect and enhance the heritage.
