Mural features typical fish from a good stew in Portimão

Project created by Inês Barracha, art director, curator, designer, teacher, illustrator and artist

Four fish used in the traditional Algarve stew recipe will be added to the interactive mural [CAL-DAY-RAH-DAH] by the MODO Association.

As part of March Jovem 2024, promoted by the Municipality of Portimão, the community will be invited to participate in this creative concept that combines gastronomy, art and culture, through a call document aimed at all young people between 14 and 35 years old, who will be able to actively contribute to the preservation and promotion of local heritage.

With the creation of new images in various public spaces, the interactive mural will become a game, inviting you to visit the city and discover all the hidden fish.

According to the Portimão municipality, each image has a QR code, reading which will reveal information about the species illustrated, the recipe for the dish and clues to other copies, with a prize for the first person to publish stories on Instagram with photos of all the fish in this stew recipe, which gets more extensive from year to year.

Responsible for artistic direction and project management, Inês Barracha, founder of Associação MODO, is from Porto, works professionally as an art director, curator, designer, teacher, illustrator and artist, assuming herself as a “creator of things, moved by matter, color, energy”, for what “recycles, transforms, mixes, shapes, paints, designs, in a close relationship with the body, with others and with life”.

Following the successful experience in March Jovem last year with the participation of illustrator Natty Peach, South African, resident in Portimão, Associação MODO will continue the interactive mural [CAL-DAY-RAH-DAH], increasing its presence and visibility of this project in the territory of Portimão with four new fish used in the traditional Algarve stew recipe.

At this year's [CAL-DAY-RAH-DAH], Inês will have the close collaboration of Rita Barracha, UX designer and creative interactivity strategy, also born in Portimão and currently residing in Switzerland, and biologist Ana Marta Costa, master in Marine Resources – artisanal fishing, which will provide references and scientific facts about the fish represented.

“Caldeirada” is an expression that can be used to describe a mixture or miscellany, in allusion to the typically Portuguese fish dish that gives it its name.

«This dish, cooked on board by fishermen, is traditionally a reuse of fish of low commercial value that results in a delicacy much more valuable than the simple sum of its parts, and therefore served as a metaphor for the project, not only because it appeared at sea, but also as a comparison with the rich mix of influences that coexist in Algarve culture, left both by the people who passed through here, as well as by immigrants or the many tourists who visit the region», explains Inês Barracha, the project's creator.
