Trial of Maddie's disappearance suspect begins in Germany

Christian Brückner, already detained for other crimes, risks a sentence of more than 15 years in prison

The trial of the main suspect in the disappearance of British child Madeleine McCann, in Portugal, began today in Brunswick, in northern Germany, for sexual crimes other than this case, confirmed a journalist from Agence France Presse (AFP).

Christian Brückner, a 47-year-old German, already detained for other crimes, risks a sentence of more than 15 years in prison for sexual assaults and rapes committed between 2000 and 2017 in Portugal.

In October last year, the Portuguese Judicial Police clarified that, in the investigation into the disappearance of the English child, in the Algarve, in 2007, steps are still being taken to clarify the situation, adding that contacts were made with Madeleine McCann's relatives.

Detained in Kiel, in northern Germany, Christian Brückner was already convicted in 2019 of the rape of a 72-year-old American tourist, in 2005, in the Portuguese town of Praia da Luz, where Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 03, 2007, who spent holidays with his parents and friends.

Regarding these facts, investigations continue and the German Public Prosecutor's Office has not yet formulated any charges for the death of Madeleine McCann, known as Maddie.
