CHUA is among the 16 hospital institutions with the highest expenditure on R&D

According to the report presented by the General Directorate of Education and Science Statistics

The Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) is among the 16 national public and private hospital institutions with the most expenditure on research and development (R&D) activities in Portugal, according to the report presented by the General Directorate of Education and Statistics. Science (DGEEC). 

Throughout 2022, CHUA – now integrated into the Algarve Local Health Unit (ULSALG) – presented an investment of 853 thousand euros in R&D, «which represents an increase of more than 10% compared to 2021» , says this hospital.

The information in the report concerns 20 hospital institutions that represented 94% of the R&D expenditure of all hospital entities, and covered 92% of their human resources involved in these activities.

CHUA's Department of Education, Innovation and Research (DEII), which is responsible for promoting and coordinating these activities, had in 2022 the involvement of 164 researchers, who carried out research work in transversal areas in the health sector.

«It is also important to mention that several multicenter studies are taking place at the institution, studies initiated by researchers and clinical trials promoted by a variety of promoters from the pharmaceutical industry and in partnerships with nationally and internationally recognized entities (regulatory bodies, European or national specialty societies, universities renowned national and international institutions and other reference hospital centers)», explains the director of DEII Francisco Serra.

CHUA, now ULSALG, has since also integrated health promotion and primary health care throughout the region (in addition to hospital units in Faro, Portimão, Lagos and Centro de Medicina e Rehabilitação CMR Sul) will further enhance and expand these activities.

CHUA will participate in PtCRIN – Portuguese Clinical Research Infrastructure Network, a clinical research network boosted by partnerships with national and international clinical and research entities and centers and will continue in the ABC (Algarve Biomedical Center) consortium with the University of Algarve, whose own results do not yet appear in the numbers presented in this report.
