«We are training future restaurant and bar professionals, but also citizens who understand the crucial role they play in society»

The Restaurant and Bar Employee CEF students at Escola EB 2,3 D. Dinis, in Quarteira, collected 2,5 tons of paper that will be converted into food to support MAPS – Movement to Support Social Problems.

Starting from a paper collection campaign entitled “Kilos de Papel por Kilos de Komida”, the action aimed to promote environmental awareness, but also to transform each kilo of paper collected, into a direct contribution to helping people who find themselves in a situation of social vulnerability and homeless people in the city of Quarteira.

Fábio Simão, president of MAPS, Fábio Simão, highlights that «the impact of a small gesture is in itself capable of changing the world of many people».

«During the last few weeks, students have been involved in collecting paper throughout the community, raising awareness of the importance of recycling, but also of the positive impact that solidarity can have on the lives of those who need it most», he adds.

The teacher responsible for the project, André Pereira Rodrigues, as well as the class director, Liliana Caetano, highlight the importance of developing students' social awareness.

«We are training future restaurant and bar professionals, but also citizens who understand the crucial role they play in society and the transformative power that their actions can have. By actively participating in solidarity initiatives, students develop empathy, compassion and understanding of social issues», they say.
