GNR detained 122 people and identified 299 for agricultural theft between June and December

Olives were the most stolen and seized product, especially Beja, Évora, Portalegre and Faro

The GNR arrested 122 people and identified another 299 between July and December last year for crimes of theft on agricultural farms, having recovered and seized 44,221 tons of olives, the corporation said today.

According to a summary of the “Campo Seguro-2023” operation, the GNR states that, between June 26th and December 31st, 2023, it “intensified patrolling, inspection and awareness raising on agricultural and forestry farms, throughout the national territory, with the aim of preventing crime in general and theft in particular, as well as possible situations of human trafficking».

During the operation, the GNR carried out 3.108 information and awareness campaigns aimed at 13.892 people “along with rural communities, in particular with farmers, on measures to prevent criminal offenses, namely on theft of agricultural products, theft of copper and other metals non-precious, situations of exploitation in a labor context related to human trafficking and also, for the safe use of agricultural and forestry vehicles».

The Guard also carried out 3.087 patrols and 1.327 other inspections, culminating in the arrest of 122 people and the identification of another 299, mainly for crimes of theft on agricultural farms.

Olives were the most stolen and seized product in several districts, especially Beja (39.719 kilos), followed by Évora (3.398), Portalegre (962), Faro (107) and Castelo Branco (35), totaling 44,221 tons.

Among the most seized products, carob beans (1.350 kilos, in the district of Faro), cork in Beja (710) and Santarém (15), with 790 kilos of chestnuts also registered in Bragança and pine cones in Lisbon (234) and Setúbal (102).

According to provisional data released by that police force in mid-December, in 2023 olive theft had more than doubled compared to 2022 and more than quadrupled compared to 2021.
