Official Collection Center for Faro has already “changed” the lives of hundreds of dogs and cats

Infrastructure was opened a year ago

223 stray animals collected and 150 animals adopted. These are some numbers that stand out in the balance of one year of activity of the Official Animal Collection Center of Faro (CROAF), carried out today by the Farense Chamber.

Opened on January 16, 2023, the equipment, which «was an aspiration of the population of Faro for many years», resulted from a municipal investment of around 1 million and 400 thousand euros, now making it possible to house abandoned animals and with a maximum capacity for 170 animals (around 120 dogs and 50 cats).

«Throughout the year 2023, within the scope of its activity, CROAF - which has a team made up of eight operational assistants, two technical assistants and two veterinarians - collected a total of 223 stray animals, of which 167 dogs and 56 cats. A total of 39 animals (38 dogs and 1 cat) were also handed over to CROAF by their owners, for reasons such as health limitations; compulsive collection; home eviction or return«, according to the Chamber of Faro.

On the other hand, «CROAF promoted, throughout 2023, the adoption of a total of 150 animals, 92 of which were dogs and 58 cats. A total of 2023 sterilizations were also carried out in 108 (36 ovariohysterectomies for dogs and 13 for cats and 48 orchiectomies for dogs and 11 for cats)».

At the same time, CROAF also carried out capture, sterilization and return (CED) programs for 269 cats, «allowing the control and monitoring of cat colonies existing in the municipality».

«This is a project that has always been highly requested by the population and today, a year after the inauguration of our CROAF, the work that has been done in favor of the animal cause is visible to all», said Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro.

The mayor also highlighted “the cooperation and collaboration of the various associations defending animal causes in the municipality and the region, as well as other partner entities, namely the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) and the Republican National Guard (GNR), in favor of a common objective: a more animal-friendly municipality and region».
