Block delivers list that encompasses “many lefts”

The list is headed by José Gusmão, economist and current MEP

The Left Bloc (BE) delivered this Friday, January 26th, to the Court of Faro, the candidate list, for the Algarve, for the Legislative Elections on March 10th.

The list is headed by José Gusmão, economist and current MEP, including six independent candidates, «activists of various causes, backgrounds and skills».

José Gusmão stated when submitting the list that the candidacy aims to «promote an openness effort that helps to respond to the countless issues that concern our population and build a region in which the Algarve can live with quality throughout the year. ».

The MEP candidate for the Algarve highlighted the seriousness of the water emergency, considering that «it is necessary to look at the unsustainable model of the Algarve economy, instead of punishing families for the consequences of this model».

The blocist candidate rejected any price increases in water for domestic consumption and challenged all parties to take a position on this matter, regretting that PS and PSD have already supported him.

António Branco, former rector of the University of Algarve and candidate's representative, stated that «the openness to independents from various activisms makes the list a Bloc of many leftists».

The president stated that «the context in which they are being held makes these elections a particularly important moment for the region and for democracy».

António Branco concluded, formulating the objective of the candidacy for these elections: «I hope that this act of handing over the list will result, on the 10th of March, in the election of José Gusmão to parliament, thus confirming the trend indicated by most of the studies of opinion, because this deputy is greatly missed by the Algarve and the country».

Guadalupe Simões, nurse, independent and number two on the list, spoke of the situation of «disinvestment in the National Health Service, both in terms of professionals and in terms of equipment» and stated that it was necessary to «re-seat the Algarve in the Assembly of the Republic ». José Gusmão is also that voice to appeal that in these elections we “take care of the SNS so that the SNS takes care of us”.

Sandra Moutinho, teacher and number 3 on the list, spoke about the lack of democracy in public schools and the huge lack of professionals, «from teachers to operational assistants, including specialized technicians».

The Bloc candidate considers that «the devaluation of education professionals combines with the cost of housing in the Algarve and makes it difficult for them to settle in this region».

Alexandre Santos, student and candidate for youth, warned of the housing crisis and the “particularly serious” expression it takes on in the Algarve.

The Bloc's youth representative recalled that «the seasonality in the supply of houses for housing adds to the seasonality in the supply of jobs to make it almost impossible to build a life in the Algarve».

Alexandre Santos also stated that «the difficulty in finding housing keeps qualified young people away from the region who would like to build their lives here».

With an application program focused on eight priorities: housing, water, health, public schools, agriculture, environment, economy, mobility and regionalization.
