Albufeira is a candidate for European Sports Capital in 2026

The Municipality of Albufeira was chosen by the Portuguese Sports Dance Federation to, on the 27th and 28th of January, host the 1st Portuguese Cup and the Under-21 National Championship in Latin and Standard dances and the 1st Training Camp of the season.

On January 27th, the National Under-21 Latin and Standard Championship will take place, the first Matchday of the
Portugal in Latins and Standard and the Champions Gala. The events, which will take place at the Albufeira Municipal Pavilion, are organized by the Portuguese Sports Dance Federation (FPDD) in partnership with Futebol Clube de Ferreiras (FCF) and the support of the Municipality of Albufeira.

After the events, for the first time, the National Circuit Champions Gala for the 2023 season will be held. Prizes will be awarded to solo athletes, pairs and groups, with national team athletes also being distinguished.

The following day, January 28th, the 1st Training Camp of the season takes place in the same location. This is a moment of training that aims to «promote socialization among athletes and allows them to train with the best in the sport at national and international level», says the Albufeira municipality.

During the presentation of the event, which took place last Friday, in the Salão Nobre of the Paços do Concelho de
Albufeira, the Mayor of Albufeira thanked the Club «which has the biggest scrolls in Dances in Albufeira» and congratulated the athletes and directors for the commitment and dedication they have given to the sport.

José Carlos Rolo said he was very pleased to be carrying out yet another initiative that «in addition to promoting Sport, attracts nationals and foreigners to visit Albufeira during the low tourism season, thus contributing to boosting the municipality's economy».

«Albufeira is a candidate for European Sports Capital in 2026. This is a huge challenge for us. Hence the Municipality's strategy of attracting large sporting organizations at district, national and international level, such as this Dance Championship, the São Silvestre Race, the Race Nature Albufeira, the Volta ao Algarve by Bicycle, the Crosse Internacional das Amendoeiras em Flor, among other events that prove that the Municipality has adequate infrastructure, technical capacity and a range of sports and groups that deserve our thanks for the work and results achieved, placing the municipality's clubs side by side with the best that is done in the country", the mayor also highlighted.

Armando Batista, vice-president of the FPDD, congratulated the FCF «for the courage to associate itself with the organization of the National Sports Dance Championship» and the Municipality of Albufeira «for the support it gives to the Clubs in their travels (which represents quite large costs) as well as for being part of this important organization».

During these two days, Albufeira will be the national capital of Sports Dance, he said.

«Portugal is already a bronze medalist in the Youth Championship, a result achieved in a participation with a total of 57 countries. This is an important milestone for us, who are the founders of Dance in Portugal».

«We are available to organize an International Championship next year and we will do everything we can to make it happen in Albufeira», he revealed.

In turn, António Colaço, president of the FCF Board, highlighted that this is a moment he has wanted and been waiting for for a long time.

«We travel hundreds of kilometers to compete, so I thank the Portuguese Dance Federation for the opportunity to hold the event in Albufeira. FCF has been dancing for 25 years. We have been the club in the Algarve for the longest time in Sports Dance and with the greatest representation».

The last intervention was made by Cristiano Cabrita, vice-president of the Albufeira Chamber and responsible for Sports, who reiterated the president's opinion on the importance of holding this type of event during the low season, "fundamental to boosting the local economy and promoting our brand internally».

According to this person in charge, the municipality's focus is to guarantee all the conditions so that the Municipality's candidacy for European Capital of Sports in 2026 is a strong and winning candidacy, which enhances the entire Albufeirense community.

«We will continue to support Sports, athletes and clubs in the municipality, whether through the execution of program contracts or by supporting transport and organizing activities», he informed.
