AD says Pedro Nuno does not have “credibility to talk about tolls”

«It is impossible to understand, much less to believe», accuses Miguel Pinto Luz

The Algarve candidacy of the Democratic Alliance accuses Pedro Nuno Santos, secretary general of the PS and former Minister of Infrastructure, of not having “credibility to talk about tolls”, after having promised that, if he becomes Government, he will abolish tolls on the A22. The PS/Algarve welcomed the Pedro Nuno's promise.

Miguel Pinto Luz, head of the AD list for the Algarve, considers it «extraordinary that, whoever had the matter of tolls under his responsibility for four years and whose party fiercely opposed the reduction approved in the Assembly of the Republic - with PS votes against -, now be a defender of abolition».

“It’s impossible to understand, much less to believe,” he adds.

The same protagonist recalls that «it was the PSD that managed to reduce tolls by 50%» and «it's good to remember».

«We are going to have a program for mobility in the region that will integrate highway, railway and air transport, all coordinated, with less costs and better service, not stray promises that no one believes in anymore», says Pinto Luz.

Cristóvão Norte, number two on the list and one of the authors of the proposal that led to a fifty percent reduction in tolls, recalls the PS's unfounded promises in other legislatures.

«You can't help but think that Pedro Nuno Santos is another person, a new man. He only falls for whoever wants to. As for us, we know that mobility is terrible in the Algarve and that fundamental changes are needed. That's what we'll do,” he says.

As for Federation of the Socialist Party of the Algarve, publicly hailed Pedro Nuno Santos for this promise.

In a press release, the PS says that, in 2015, taking into account Portugal's financial conditions, the Socialist Party made a commitment to reduce the value of tolls by up to 50%, an objective that on January 1st of this year "was actually surpassed , when the value of the reduction on Via do Infante reached 60%».

«In 2015, with the PSD/CDS Government, crossing Via do Infante between Lagos and Vila Real de Santo António cost 11,60 euros while in January 2024 the same route started to cost 4,65 euros», says the PS .

«The end of tolls on Via do Infante has always been the objective and purpose of the struggle of the Algarve socialists, their mayors and their deputies to the Assembly of the Republic, a commitment that with Pedro Nuno Santos is achieved», concludes the socialists' note.
