Navy coordinated 391 maritime search and rescue actions this year

The Navy has coordinated 391 maritime search and rescue actions since the beginning of the year, resulting in 338 lives saved, that branch of the Armed Forces said today.

In a statement, the Navy indicated that these maritime search and rescue actions were carried out through the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centers of Lisbon, Ponta Delgada and the Funchal Subcenter.

According to the Navy, in the area corresponding to the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Lisbon, 232 incidents were recorded until November in which 300 people were saved.

In the Ponta Delgada MRCC's area of ​​responsibility, 137 search and rescue actions were coordinated, with 66 people rescued, according to that institution.

The Navy also reported that 22 search and rescue actions were coordinated at the Funchal Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Subcenter, with 22 people being saved.

In November, the Navy coordinated 36 maritime search and rescue actions, which resulted in 12 lives being saved.

That institution highlighted that different organizations contribute to the success of the search and rescue system and resources from different entities are committed, namely the Portuguese Navy, National Maritime Authority, Portuguese Air Force and other entities belonging to the auxiliary structure of the National Search and Rescue System, in particular the National Institute of Medical Emergency – Guidance Center for Urgent Patients at Sea, national and regional Civil Protection services, firefighters and maritime and port administrations.

The Navy also highlighted the support provided by merchant ships and fishing vessels in search and rescue actions, which deviate from their commercial routes to provide the necessary assistance, in accordance with the coordination of the National Centers.
