Sleeps in tourist accommodation rise 7,5% in November

Overnight stays by non-residents rose 9,9% and corresponded to 3,2 million

The tourist accommodation sector registered 1,9 million guests and 4,6 million overnight stays in November, representing growth of 9,2% and 7,5%, respectively, year-on-year, the National Statistics Institute announced today. (INE).

According to the quick estimate of tourist activity for November 2023, published today by INE, compared to the same month in 2019, the last comparable one before the covid-19 pandemic, which affected the tourism sector, the increase in the number of guests was 8,4% and overnight stays was 12,3%.

Compared to the same month in 2022, overnight stays from non-residents rose 9,9% and corresponded to 3,2 million, while overnight stays from residents grew 2,3%, to 1,3 million overnight stays.

The British (15,4% of total non-resident overnight stays in November), German (12,8%) and North American (9,3%) markets were the main markets for tourists in November, with presented respective growth of 15,6%, 10,1% and 14,4% during the month under review.

In November, there were increases in overnight stays in all regions, with emphasis on Alentejo (+15,3%) and Centro (+10,5%), with the Lisbon Metropolitan Area concentrating 31,9% of overnight stays, ahead of Algarve (18,0%) and North (17,7%).

Residents' overnight stays increased in November in Alentejo (+13,3%), in the Center (+6,7%), and in the North (+4,5%), having decreased in the remaining regions, with The largest decreases were observed in the Algarve (-5,9%) and in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (-2,7%).

The average stay in tourist accommodation establishments was 2,4 nights, 1,6% less compared to November last year. Alentejo and Madeira had the biggest increases in the indicator (1,5% and 0,4%, respectively), while the Center recorded the biggest drop (-2,6%).

The highest values ​​of this indicator were observed in Madeira (4,70 nights) and the Algarve (3,75 nights), compared to the shortest in the Center (1,70 nights) and Alentejo (1,82 nights).

The net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments was 36,0% in November, 0,6 percentage points more than in the same month of 2022 or 1,9 percentage points compared to October.

Likewise, the net room occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments also rose, increasing 1,0 points in November and 1,8 points compared to October, to 46,8%.

In November, the highest bed occupancy rates were recorded in Madeira (60,8%) and Lisbon (48,6%).
