Portimão and the Turkish municipality of Bayrakli come together to create a “BiomaterialKIT”

The project involves around 100 students in Portimão

A delegation from Portimão traveled to the Turkish municipality of Bayrakli to start the project “Town Twinning between Turkey and EU (Twinning for a Green Future)”, which for a year will create, together with the Faculty of Economics of Izmir, a “biomaterialki” of practical and pedagogical experiences, aiming for more sustainable consumption and with the circular economy as a backdrop.

The delegation from Portimão City Council and the Instituto Superior Manuel Teixeira Gomes (ISMAT) traveled to this Turkish municipality to, in addition to this pilot project, financed with 115,955.52 euros, develop a set of pedagogical and experimental activities.

The project involves around 100 students in Portimão, spread across EBS da Bemposta and Escola Secundária Poeta António Aleixo, and an equal number of students in schools in Bayrakli.

The delegation, led by José Cardoso, councilor of the Portimão Chamber, was received by the president of the Municipality of Bayrakli, located in the province of Izmir, with both underlining the importance of this partnership, as it allows the exchange of experiences and knowledge, «also providing that the themes of sustainability and the circular economy integrate local policies more effectively».

Over the next few months, the twin municipalities and the two academies will develop actions together and with the school community of both municipalities, in order to raise awareness in their respective communities about the urgency and importance of adapting to climate change, which is expected to have an impact on both Portugal and Turkey.

Among the various moments scheduled for next year, there is a bootcamp in Portimão, between the 19th and 23rd of February, with students from both groups, the visit of a Turkish delegation in the last week of February, a public presentation of the project to the local community, scheduled for the 25th of May, and a workshop with final exhibition in October.
