Portimão Museum hosted the annual meeting of the EMYA 2024 jury

The EMYA 2024 Awards conference and ceremony will take place between the 1st and 4th of May next year, in Portimão.

The Portimão Museum hosted, on the 13th 3rd 14th of November, the evaluation meeting by the ten members who make up the jury of EMYA – European Museum of the Year Award 2024.

After technical visits to the 53 candidate museums from 24 European countries, and over the three days of the meeting, the jury analyzed and decided which museums would be nominated for EMYA2024 and other award categories, to be awarded at the conference and ceremony that will take place between the 1st and 4th of May next year, in Portimão.

There was also room for a meeting with the mayor Isilda Gomes, the councilor for Culture Teresa Mendes, and the local team that will prepare EMYA2024 in Portimão, in which Joan Roca, chairman do Board of Trustees do European Museum Forum, Amina Krvavac, president of the jury of European Museum of the Year Award, and Mathieu Viau-Corville, one of the jury members and member of next year's EMYA preparatory working group within the European Museum Forum (EMF).

EMYA was founded in 1977 by the EMF with the aim of recognizing, encouraging, rewarding and demonstrating excellence and innovation in the area of ​​museums, particularly with regard to public quality and social responsibility, having been awarded in 2010 to the Portimão museum equipment the Council of Europe Museum Award which, together with the European Museum of the Year Award, constitute the two main categories of distinctions planned.

 

 

These important awards aim, in the European context, to highlight the role of museums in relation to the cultural and natural heritage of their social environment, tolerance, sustainability, accessibility, inclusion, democracy, human rights and intercultural dialogue, uniting cultures and overcoming borders and political barriers.

Following the partnership agreement between the Municipality of Portimão and the EMF, celebrated on July 11, 2018, the city's museum began to be designated as “the home” of the European Museum of the Year Award, with all the secretariat of the applications taking place there. of the various museums representing the 46 countries that make up the Council of Europe and the respective documentary archive.

In addition to the two main distinctions – European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) and Council of Europe Museum Award (CoE) -, there are five more award categories, including, since 2019, the “Portimão Museum Award”, which is aimed at to the European museum considered to be the most welcoming and inclusive.
