Minister of Internal Administration signs contract to build GNR barracks in Olhos de Água

This is an investment of 710 thousand euros (plus VAT)

The Minister of Internal Administration approved today, with the Albufeira City Council, the inter-administrative contract for the construction of the GNR territorial post in Olhos de Água, in that Algarve municipality.

This is an investment of 710 thousand euros (plus VAT), which has been “long awaited”, highlighted the mayor of Albufeira.

It is «an imminently touristic municipality and its population grows 10 times in the summer, which takes us to much higher levels of security needs than would be a permanent need, in terms of population», said José Carlos Rolo.

«Security is one of the variables that tourists most seek and value in a given destination, but it is also very important for residents», added the mayor of Albufeira.

This was one of five contracts signed today by minister José Luís Carneiro, which also provided for the construction of the GNR territorial post in Poceirão (Palmela) and the rehabilitation of the posts in Carrazeda de Ansiães and Sever do Vouga.

In Madeira, the rehabilitation and expansion of the Santa Cruz PSP Police Station will advance.

The Minister of Internal Administration stated that “the financing for these investments is guaranteed” and that it is up to the local authorities to launch public tenders.

«These investments are part of a set of priorities to enhance the working conditions of members of the security forces and to carry out this special public service mission in a dignified manner. It is important to fulfill and honor the commitments that are made and which cover municipalities throughout the national territory, so that Portugal continues to be a safe and peaceful country», concluded the official.

The municipalities covered have a total population of 171 thousand inhabitants and are located in the districts of Aveiro, Bragança, Faro, Setúbal and the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The Investment Programming Law in the Modernization and Operationality of Security Forces and Services foresees, by 2026, a total investment in infrastructure of 236 million euros.
