Surgeries, consultations and emergencies: CHUA increases care activity in the 9 months of 2023

During this period, around 14.388 surgical interventions were carried out, which represents an increase of 6,9% compared to the same period in 2022

The Algarve University Hospital Center (RAIN) increased, in the nine months of this year, its assistance activity, highlighting the increase in areas such as surgical activity, consultations carried out and care provided in emergency services.

After completing the third quarter of 2023, the RAIN presents the main indicators and data relating to healthcare performance in recent months, noting, for example, that around 14.388 surgical interventions were carried out in this period, which represents an increase of 6,9% compared to the same period in 2022.

A more detailed analysis allows us to see not only an increase in the level of total scheduled surgical activity, with 739 more surgeries (an increase of 7,2%), as well as an increase in urgent activity, where 184 more surgeries were carried out, (an increase of 5,8 .2022%, compared to XNUMX).

CHUA also highlights the evolution seen in scheduled activity, essentially supported by the growth in outpatient activity, where 859 more surgeries were performed (+12,9%).

On the other hand, during this period there was a reduction in conventional scheduled activity in 347 surgeries (-12,1%). Additional surgical activity represented, in the first nine months of the year, 45% of scheduled surgical activity, that is, 7,2% more compared to the same period in 2022.

Regarding external consultations, there was, compared to the same period last year, an increase of 4,7% in medical consultations carried out, that is, 11.535 more consultations out of a total of 254.889.

In this context, the response to requests for first medical consultations from Primary Health Care stands out, which presents a positive variation of 13,2%, compared to the period January-September 2022, with 3.422 more consultations, for a total of 29.408.

There was also a 39.6% increase in non-medical consultations, with an additional 15.116 in a total of 53.272 consultations.

According to CHUA, the increase in consultation activity, in year-on-year terms, is greater in the Medical Department with a further 4.331 consultations (+4,5%), with special emphasis on activity at Hospital Terras do Infante, in Lagos, where a further 1.725 ​​consultations were carried out (+ 116,1%).

«Despite the growth in CHUA's general assistance activity, there has been an increase in demand, which has resulted in an increase in waiting lists for consultations and surgery», emphasizes the hospital center.

Another area that stands out in CHUA's care performance is the Day Hospital, which carried out 2023 sessions in the first nine months of 45.235, which represents an increase of 4,4% compared to the same period in 2022.

With regard to Complementary Diagnostic Tools carried out internally, there was a slight decrease of 2,5% compared to the same period in 2022, with 3.858.357 exams carried out in the first nine months of this year.

Regarding care in the various CHUA Emergency Services, until the end of September this year, 285.420 consultations were carried out, that is, 1.894 more emergency episodes, which represents an increase of 0,7% compared to the same period last year.

The daily average of emergency visits was, in the period under analysis, 1.046, seven more visits/day than in the same period of 2022. It should be noted that this behavior is based on the increase seen in the level of urgent care activity in Emergency Services Basic CHUA, with an increase of 6,5%.

In the first nine months of 2023, inpatient care activity was 7,1% higher than in the same period of 2022, with 1.701 more patients being discharged. The average delay in hospitalization of acute patients is now 10 days, with an occupancy rate of 94,5%.

The CHUA board of directors gives a “very positive” assessment of the assistance performance and congratulates the professionals who contribute daily to “improving access and the provision of differentiated care for our users”.
