Bishop Emeritus of São Tomé and Príncipe presents book in Tavira

Bishop D. Manuel António arrived in the Parishes of Tavira at Easter last year and has integrated the Tavira community more effectively since September

D. Manuel António dos Santos, Bishop Emeritus of São Tomé and Príncipe, will present, on November 30th, from 21pm, his book “What is it to be Catholic?”, at the Álvaro de Campos Library, in Tavira.

According to the Diocese of Algarve, the author's «concern is to be able to share, with the community where he currently collaborates, his reflection on a society that still identifies itself as Catholic, but which, for the most part, does not know the foundations of Catholicism and where the truths of faith begin to become subjective”.

«D. Manuel António also invites us, in this small work, to follow a path of questions, the answers to which seek to structure those elements – concise, but biblically based – on which the Catholic faith is established», he adds.

The author says he hopes that «this small book will help Catholic Christians to have foundations for the truth of the faith they live in their Church».

During Advent, the Bishop Emeritus will provide the community and all interested parties with weekly catechesis, in which he will delve deeper into each chapter of his work.

Manuel António Mendes dos Santos was born in São Joaninho, Viseu, on May 20, 1960, he entered the Minor Seminary of the Diocese of Lamego in 1978, later moving on to the Seminary of the Congregation of Claretian Missionaries in Carvalhos (Vila Nova de Gaia) , being ordained a priest on July 20, 1985.

Between 1994 and 1995 he left for a missionary experience in São Tomé, which led him to specialize in Pastoral Theology at the Universitá Pontificia Salesiana, in Rome.

He returned to Portugal, where he was parish priest of São Sebastião and responsible for the Vigararia do Coração de Maria, in the Diocese of Setúbal.

It was on December 1, 2006 that Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as Diocesan Bishop of São Tomé and Príncipe, where he remained until his resignation was requested, granted by Pope Francis on July 13, 2022.
