Travel by residents within the country represents 85,6% of trips in the 2nd quarter

While trips abroad were 1,9% below the values ​​recorded in the same period in 2019

Travel by residents within the country represented 85,6% of total travel in the second quarter, while travel abroad was 1,9% below the values ​​recorded in the same period in 2019, before the pandemic, INE reported.

According to data on resident tourist demand, published today by the National Statistics Institute, in the second quarter of this year, residents in Portugal made 5,7 million trips, corresponding to an increase of 6,1%.

Travel within the national territory was decisive for the increase, with an increase of 5,5% to 4,8 million, which represented 85,6% of trips.

Travel to foreign countries grew by 9,8%, totaling 812,2 thousand trips (14,4% of the total) and with a progressive approach to 2019 levels, but still remaining 1,9% below these values ​​in the quarter in which analysis (-4,6% in the first quarter of this year).

“Leisure, recreation or vacation” trips were the main motivation for traveling between April and June and increased by 9,1% year-on-year, representing 48,4% of total trips by residents, reaching 2,7 million.

The reason “visiting family or friends” originated 2,1 million trips (37,8% of the total), registering a growth of 3,2% (+1,3% compared to the second quarter of 2019).

“Hotels and similar” accounted for 25,3% of overnight stays resulting from tourist trips in the second quarter, with “free private accommodation” being the main accommodation option (60,4% of overnight stays).
