Portimão challenges residents to take a basic life support course

Portimão City Council challenges residents, in areas affected by the community defibrillation program cabins, to take a basic life support course with an automatic external defibrillator (AED). 

The challenge arises within the scope of International Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Day, which takes place this Monday, October 16th.

After successfully completing the training, the citizen will be integrated into the Municipal AED Program in their area of ​​influence, thus expanding the universe of operators trained to respond quickly and effectively to a first alert in the case of cardiac arrest.

The requirements to undertake this training are to have physical conditions to practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation and accept to belong to the Municipal AED Program.

In the municipality of Portimão, there are six street DAEs: Alvor – Rua Dr. Frederico Ramos Mendes; Mexilhoeira Grande – Rua da Igreja; Portimão – Praia da Rocha/Av. Tomás Cabreira, Praça 1.º de Maio, riverside area (next to the Captaincy) and Alameda da República.

These cabins were activated on four occasions in the last two years, allowing an AED to quickly arrive at the victim, before emergency services.

On the occasion of International Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Day, mass training in basic life support (BLS) took place this Monday morning, at Escola Secundária Poeta António Aleixo, aimed at 11th and 12th grade students. th year and to teaching and non-teaching staff at this educational establishment in Portimão.

The action aimed to raise awareness among the student population about the importance of carrying out basic life support maneuvers in advance, allowing to increase the probability of survival, and included the participation of members of the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Portimão and the collaboration of the Fire Department. of Portimão and Portuguese Red Cross – Portimão Delegation, as well as the Civil Protection Technical Course at Escola Poeta António Aleixo.
