Small biomass plants in 5 municipalities in the Algarve supported by the Environmental Fund

Applications are open until November 30th

Local-scale energy generation projects in small biomass plants in five municipalities in the Algarve - Aljezur, Lagos, Monchique, Portimão, Silves and Vila do Bispo -, as well as in two other regions of the country, can now be supported by funds from the Environmental Fund.

The Environmental Fund of the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action has now launched a Notice granting support to small biomass plants, with a global allocation of two million euros. Applications are open until November 30th.

In addition to the Algarve, the beneficiaries are local authorities and intermunicipal communities included in two other pilot projects approved by RCM nº2572021, of March 22, 2021, namely, in the Alto Tâmega region, the municipalities of Boticas, Chaves, Montalegre, Ribeira de Pena, Valpaços and Vila Pouca de Aguiar, as well as, in the Coimbra region, the municipalities of Arganil, Coimbra, Góis, Lousã, Miranda do Corvo, Pampilhosa da Serra and Penela.

«This Notice aims to support the creation of solutions for the valorization of biomass in territories with a high risk of rural fires, in a clear contribution to the pursuit of the objectives of the National Plan for Integrated Rural Fire Management», highlights the Ministry of the Environment.

At the same time, «the local economy will be boosted, creating qualified jobs, and lasting relationships will be established with forestry producers or local companies that produce surplus materials».

The Ministry of the Environment also clarifies that this notice is complementary to the Project “Sustainable forest management — Support for the creation of forestry or composting recycling bins”, which supports the creation of collectors and nearby parks to collect waste, and collection circuits of forest biomass.

The financing rate is 100%.

The types of intervention include training and job qualifications in the area of biomass energy; the installation of equipment necessary for small-scale local energy production; dissemination and awareness actions among the population to use the surplus resulting from its activity; solutions for the management and collection of waste from forestry farms, which contribute to the efficiency of biomass storage and transport, in order to optimize collection routes and deadlines, allowing monitoring of storage at collection points.
