Passengers at airports reach historic highs again in August

An increase of 13,2% compared to the same month last year

National airports handled 7,2 million passengers in August, an increase of 13,2% compared to the same month last year, continuing to reach historic highs, according to INE data, released today.

«In August 2023, national airports handled 7,2 million passengers and 17.500 tons of cargo and mail, corresponding to variations of +13,2% and -8,2%, respectively, compared to August 2022» , noted the National Statistics Institute (INE), which published quick air transport statistics for that month.

Compared to August 2019, before the covid-19 pandemic that severely affected the aviation sector, there were increases of 11% in passenger movement and 3,2% in cargo movement.

INE pointed out that «since the beginning of 2023, there have been historic highs in monthly passenger numbers at national airports», and in August, «an average daily disembarkation of 112.900 passengers was recorded, a value higher than that recorded in August 2022 (99.400; +13,5%) and 11,5% above that seen in August 2019 (101.300).

Between January and August 2023, the number of passengers increased by 23,1% compared to the same period in 2022, while cargo and mail movement recorded a decline (-2,4%).

Compared to the same period in 2019, there were increases of 11,7% in passengers and 7,6% in cargo and mail.

Considering the volume of passengers disembarked and boarded on international flights until August, the United Kingdom was the main country of origin and destination for flights, with growth of 19,4% in the number of disembarked passengers and 20,2% in the number of passengers shipped, compared to the same period in 2022.

France occupied the second position, with increases of 20,9% and 21,4%, in the same order, followed by Spain, with significant increases compared to the same period in 2022 (+40,5% as country of origin of flights and +40,1% as a country of destination).
