New School of Sagres returns to the fortress under the motto of “Uncomfortable Heritage”

The New School of Sagres project will bring together, in the Fortaleza de Sagres, different areas of scientific and practical knowledge, from the past to the current

The seventh edition of the “New School of Sagres” project will take place in the Fortaleza de Sagres, on the 24th and 25th of October, organized by the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos (CCVL), with the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve.

This event takes place in a Festival environment, and offers participants various activities, such as the construction of a 10 meter long Modular Caravel, Programming and Robotics Workshops, exploration of collections that reveal the bio and geodiversity of various environments and ecosystems.

Maps and navigation instruments will also be unveiled, as well as reflection on “Uncomfortable Heritage”, where the topic of slavery and skin color must be addressed and rethought, this time using Artificial Intelligence tools, this is also a subject uncomfortable today.

The New School of Sagres project will bring together, in the Sagres Fortress, different areas of scientific knowledge and practical knowledge, from the past to the current, as a conceptual justification in the promotion of activities related to the Arts of Navigation, History and Knowledge.

«In this edition, whose theme is “Uncomfortable Heritages”, we approach knowledge with a careful look, in the light of science, at the “stories” behind what are today considered (un)comfortable heritages, with a view to learning from history of the past, and face the future with respect for everyone, side by side with knowledge", highlights the CCV Lagos.

In this event, a set of practical activities of a scientific and technological nature will be promoted, suitable for students from the 1st to the 3rd cycle (with adaptation of the content to the teaching level), which will be a guiding thread of a narrative of historical events, referring to the time of slavery since the time of
discoveries, where skin color and cultural issues are still uncomfortable factors.

In each activity, notions will be addressed that refer to passages and moments in history when slavery was a socially accepted reality, and, throughout the visit to the fortress, the activities will address concepts and values that should be seen as world heritage , but without forgetting the paths and realities that surround them.

Participants will try to build a 10 meter long modular Caravel, handle navigation instruments, read maps and charts, use sundials, examine collections, explore videos in virtual reality, understand 3D modeling, learn a little about robotics and programming in workshop environment, among many other discoveries.

The event is aimed at school audiences on the 24th and 25th of October, open to registration. The activities will take place from 10:00 am to 17:30 pm.

Families who wish to participate can do so by registering.

The existence of Sagres School constitutes one of the greatest myths in the History of Portugal. It is thought that the correct interpretation of the term Escola de Sagres, implemented by Infante D. Henrique, would be associated with a meeting place for connoisseurs of the art of sailing and holders of scientific and technological knowledge to, together, develop innovative navigation methods , preparation and production of navigation charts and construction of vessels for the discovery of new lands and commercial routes.
