Missão Continente donated 925 thousand euros in surplus food to institutions in the Algarve

Under the Missão Continente project

The Missão Continente project donated more than 925 thousand euros in surplus food to 70 social solidarity and animal support institutions in the Algarve, in the first half of 2023, the promoters of this initiative announced.

In addition to donations to the institutions it regularly helps, Missão Continente “makes food available to employees, through the social areas of the project's stores and warehouses”.

«Donated items are considered surplus when they lose their commercial character, but preserve all the necessary conditions for safe consumption, avoiding food waste in a circular economy logic. These include fresh products such as fruit, vegetables, grocery stores and bakery items, among other food items», according to Continente, which promotes this social responsibility project.

Across the country, «15,3 million euros in food and non-food products were donated to 1 institutions».

In food surpluses alone, «this support totaled 13,6 million euros, the equivalent of more than 5,5 million saved meals».

This year Missão Continente celebrates its 20th anniversary and the work of reusing and redistributing surplus food dates back to 1994. Currently, all Continente stores have partnerships with various social solidarity and animal support institutions and donations take place daily, throughout the year.

«Continente’s goal is to achieve “zero waste”, that is, to avoid wasting any food that is ready to be consumed, speeding up the flow of products and avoiding tons of waste».

Missão Continente represents all of Continente's social responsibility initiatives, such as Community Support, Inclusive Development and Environmental Citizenship.
