Bad weather: Civil protection recommends avoiding unnecessary travel

The population is already receiving alert messages from Civil Protection

The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) today recommended that citizens avoid unnecessary travel on Thursday due to the forecast of rain and strong wind, a consequence of the passage of depression Aline across the continent.

At a press conference, Miguel Cruz, second commander of ANEPC, said that SMS alerts will be sent to the population about the worsening of the weather from today onwards, but especially on Thursday.

According to Miguel Cruz, the device's readiness level will increase from yellow to orange from 00:00 on Thursday.

Civil protection warned that, today, rain is expected to begin in the north and center and that on Thursday it will spread to the entire continental territory.

The Authority asks for attention when traveling on roads, avoiding flooded areas and activities near the sea.

Mainland Portugal will be affected by depression Aline, which transports a mass of hot, humid and unstable air, which will bring heavy precipitation and gusts of wind that could exceed 100 kilometers/hour and sea disturbances.

Due to the forecast of strong rain and wind, the IPMA issued an orange warning for the 18 districts of the continent.

Tomorrow, October 19th, the rain, "sometimes strong and persistent" and accompanied by thunder, and the strong wind, with gusts "up to 110 kilometers per hour (km/h)", will place the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo under orange warning, announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
