Matilde Jorge wins at the start of The Campus Carby VW Ladies Open

The Campus Carby VW Ladies Open is the first of three international women's tournaments to take place consecutively in the Algarve

The Portuguese Matilde Jorge inaugurated, this Sunday, October 8th, the second edition of The Campus Carby VW Ladies Open, in Quinta do Lago (Loulé), with a victory that qualified her for the last round of the qualifying.

Currently in 554th place in the world rankings, Matilde Jorge has already exhausted her wild cards of the season for main teams, but started the first mission of the week on the right foot by defeating Viktoria Morvayova (485th), from Slovakia, 7-5 and 6-3 after 1h47.

With the victory over the 14th seed, the 19-year-old tennis player from Guimarães entered her name in the round of access to the main table, where there are already five compatriots — including her older sister, Francisca Jorge, but also the guests Ana Filipa Santos, Maria Garcia, Carolina Mesquita and Maria Beatriz Teixeira.

To achieve this objective, Matilde Jorge will have to overcome, in Monday's round, the Latvian Diana Marcinkevica, fifth favorite in 366th place in the world hierarchy.

The remaining Portuguese tennis players who played on this first day of The Campus Carby VW Ladies Open ended up eliminated: Sara Spear (1060th) lost 6-3 and 6-2 to German Kathleen Kanev (403rd); Milla Sequeira (without professional classification) 6-2 and 6-0 against French Manon Leonard (437th); Amália Suciu by 6-1 and 6-2 against the first seed, Croatian Antonia Ruzic (268th); and Carla Tomai for the 6-2 and 6-0 partials against the British Eden Silva (364th).
