Filipe Veríssimo and Algarve choirs inaugurate Algarve Organ Festival 2023

Opening concert is on Friday, the 3rd

O Algarve International Organ Festival is back and will open with concerts by organist Filipe Veríssimo, which will also feature voice, in Portimão and Faro, on the 3rd and 4th of November, Friday and Saturday, respectively, always at 21pm.

On November 3rd, the Igreja Matriz de Portimão hosts the opening concert of the XVI Algarve International Organ Festival 2023, with organist Filipe Veríssimo and the participation of the Adágio Choir, directed by António Alves.

«After a first part where the historical organ and its sound recordings will be the protagonist, in the choral participation works by Mozart and Bach will be performed and, finally, the highlight will be the presentation of Te Deum in C by Benjamin Britten (1913-1976 ), with Beatriz Direito in the soprano voice solos», according to the Música XXI association, which organizes the event.

The following day, Saturday, November 4th, Filipe Veríssimo appears at the organ of the Cathedral of Faro, sharing the concert with the Coro Cantate Domino, directed by Rui Jerónimo. Glosses, Partitas and Sonatas fill the solo program, followed by choral participation with the interpretation of five reference works, by Bach, Franck, Mozart, Caccini and Handel.

The concerts are free of charge and do not require prior reservation.

before heading to Faro, on Saturday morning, organist Filipe Veríssimo offers an Organ Masterclass at the Igreja Matriz de Portimão, aimed at teachers and students of keyboard instruments and ancient music, heritage scholars and other interested parties.

Filipe Veríssimo is Capela Master and Principal Organist at the Church of Lapa in Porto. He graduated in Sacred Music at the School of Arts of the Catholic University, where he studied organ, choral conducting and orchestral conducting, having continued his organ studies in Paris. He is artistic director of several Organ Cycles and Festivals.

The Coral Adágio Group was born in Portimão, in September 1989, and has around 30 members. His career includes international tours, performances on radio and television programs and concerts with an orchestra. In 2008, he recorded his first exclusive CD, (L)atitudeS.

The Cantate Domino Choir aims to contribute musically to the most solemn liturgical celebrations held in the Cathedral of Faro, having started participating in the Liturgy in 2009. Since then, he has added a set of other religious and profane compositions to his repertoire.

O Algarve 2023 Organ Festival has the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve, the Municipalities of Faro, Loulé, Portimão and Tavira, from the Luxembourg agency Kultur LX, with support for publicity from the Algarve Tourism Region, with communication partners Antena 2, Sul Informação and Rua FM and with the Hotel accommodation partner Faro. It also has a partnership with the Diocese of the Algarve, the Cabido da Sé de Faro, of the Order of Carmo of Faro, the Parishes of Portimão, Boliqueime and Tavira and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Tavira.
