UAlg team promotes Higher Education among Primary and Secondary students

Project aims to make UAlg known, its training offer and what is done at the university

The University of Algarve will promote lectures and other teaching activities at Basic and Secondary Education schools, «with the aim of continuing to strengthen relations between younger students and higher education, in another edition of the Equipa UAlg event, which will take place throughout the current academic year.

With this initiative, the University of Algarve intends to «provide students and teachers in primary and secondary schools with in-depth knowledge in diverse scientific areas and raise awareness of the importance of entering higher education».

The 2023/2024 edition has a total of 156 lectures, distributed across 20 scientific areas, of which 31 are included in the offer catalog for the first time.

Held mainly by teachers and researchers from UAlg, the lectures can be integrated into the subject programs and activities planned by the schools. The themes are defined according to the age group and level of training of the recipients.

Lectures preferably take place in schools or at universities. However, there remains the possibility of holding lectures online.

In the 2022/23 academic year, 110 lectures were held, involving 4100 students and teachers from secondary schools, which clearly shows the importance of this UAlg extension initiative to the community.

In total, the project is divided into three categories.

One of them is “Decide for yourself: choose UAlg”, which consists of information sessions about UAlg's training offer and includes the lecture “I'm a student on a professional course and I'm going to university!”.

«This is an information session on the special competitions for entry into higher education for holders of dual certification courses in secondary education and specialized artistic courses; the procedures and other relevant information about access to degrees and CTESP», according to UAlg.

In the “The University goes to School” category, activities and lectures provided by a UAlg professor are available, either online or in person.

“The School comes to UAlg”, in turn, translates into a set of actions that take place on the University’s premises.

In addition to the offer presented, there is also the possibility of organizing other initiatives, such as visits or specific activities according to the needs of each group/class.
