The Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the City Council of Albufeira will hold, this Thursday, October 12th, from 15pm, a guided visit to the conservation and restoration work of Paderne Castle.
The conservation and restoration work on the Almohad rammed earth modules of the walls of Paderne Castle is being carried out by the company In Situ, Conservação de Bens Culturais, Lda., under a cooperation protocol between DRCAlg and Albufeira City Council . Supported with funding from CRESC Algarve 2020 – Algarve Regional Operational Program.
Paderne Castle is a hisn, a small Hispano-Muslim rural fortification from the Almohad period (2nd half of the XNUMXth century and first decades of the XNUMXth century), in whose walls a unique and now lost construction process was used: military rammed earth.
The process consisted of mixing local earth, added with inert materials and stabilized with air lime, which were compacted, between ramparts, by flooring. The block or module obtained, once exposed to prolonged carbonation, acquired the resistance of stone with which it came to us.
The European Days of Conservation and Restoration is an initiative promoted by ECCO – European Confederation of Conservator-Restorers Organizations that takes place annually in October, since the European Year of Cultural Heritage (2018).
From the 9th to the 15th of October, similar to what has been happening since 2018, activities will be carried out in various European countries, with a view to promoting and disseminating good conservation and restoration practices in safeguarding European cultural heritage.
