What politics will be like in the age of networks is an open question

“Territories in the era of networks” is the title of the new book by António Covas, economist, retired professor at the University of Algarve, regular collaborator of Sul Informação and national newspapers, which will be launched this Thursday, October 12th, at 17:30 pm, at the UAlg Gambelas Campus Library.

According to the author, the new book, released by Editora Sílabo, is «a compilation of chronicles and articles published in the press».

The work will be presented by Hugo Pinto, professor at UALg and researcher at CinTurs-UAlg and the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra.

Synopsis:
What politics will be like in the era of networks is an open question, with collective intelligence being a cognitive resource that needs to be developed and practiced to increasingly legitimize political democracy.

The network paradigm, due to its extraordinary fluidity and connectivity, has a great multi-territorial latitude and, knowing that deterritorialization and extraterritoriality are, due to globalization, one of the main trends of our time, we can infer the extraordinary relevance of a well-conducted reticular policy.

All territories are called into question, almost all threats are extraterritorial and many places are dematerialized and converted into non-places. The essential point is that the logic of digital platforms and communities can give rise to new territories, although it does not replace the representative mediation of political democracy.

In the end, territories in the network era will be the result of the convergence between the digitalization of territories and the territorialization of the digital device.
