Tavira advances with plan to promote physical activity in the municipality

There are activities for all age groups and conditions

The Municipality of Tavira entered into a partnership with the Casa do Povo de Santo Estêvão, the Clube de Vela de Tavira, the Tavira Natação Clube, the RIA – Aqua Clube and the Clube Bike Team Tavira for the implementation of the Physical Activity Promotion Plan of the county.

The “All in Movement” plan, which «aims to respond to the guidelines established in the national strategy for the Promotion of Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing», runs between October this year and June 2024 and involves an investment of more than 142 thousand euros.

In this context, and in order to coordinate all projects and provide advice and guidance to the population, there is the municipality's Municipal Office for the Promotion of Physical Activity, operating at the Dr. Eduardo Mansinho Municipal Pavilion.

The projects are free and cover audiences of different ages.

“Crescer em Movimento” is aimed at children and young people between 3 and 17 years old. This includes the “Infantários em Movimento” project, developed on the premises of school establishments for children between 3 and 5 years old, “Move-te na Escola”, which covers all 1st Cycle students, and “Desportiv@ mente”, which is aimed at children and young people hosted in social solidarity institutions in the municipality.

“Põe-te a Mexer” was designed for adults aged 18 to 55 and includes the projects “Gimnasticando” (bi-weekly maintenance gymnastics and aerobics classes, in the parishes) and XutosN'Bola (informal futsal groups and users of municipal sports facilities).

“VIVA +” is for adults over 55 years old: it includes ActiveSenior (bi-weekly maintenance gymnastics classes in all parishes and gerontomotricity administered in homes and day centers) and Hidro Sénior, which provides water aerobics activities, in municipal swimming pools.

The “Physical activity and health” program is for residents with health needs and brings together the project
Adapted Physical Activity (for citizens with some type of disability) and “Gato” are developed in collaboration with the Drug Addicts Help Group and aimed at this population, including indoor and outdoor physical and sporting activities.

In partnership with ACES Sotavento, there are also the Diabetes em Movimento projects (community physical exercise program for people with type 2 diabetes, whose sessions take place three times a week, at the Pavilhão Municipal Dr. Eduardo Mansinho), the Proximity Respiratory Rehabilitation Program ( developed in partnership with the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve and the Municipality of Tavira, whose sessions take place three times a week, at the Pavilhão Municipal Dr. Eduardo Mansinho), Combating Obesity (aimed at users over 3 years of age in the ACES Functional Units Leeward).

Finally, the projects “Todos a Caminhar” and “Tavira Convid'a Pedalae” are transversal to all programs. The first consists of weekly marches and races and covers all parishes. The second includes guided mountain bike tours and equally covers all parishes.

With this plan, the Câmara de Tavira intends to «lower the levels of physical inactivity, throughout the life cycle, and provide a diversified and free sports offer».
