6.9 earthquake registered in Morocco felt in the Algarve

The earthquake occurred in the mountainous area south of Marrakesh

An earthquake of magnitude 6.9 (Richter), registered at 23:11 this Friday, September 8, on land, 65 kilometers from Marrakesh (Morocco), was felt in the Algarve. 

There are several reports on social media of people who felt the earthquake in Loulé, Faro, Estoi, Lagos, Olhão and Quarteira. There are also testimonies from those who felt the earthquake in Lisbon.

The earthquake occurred in the mountainous area south of Marrakesh.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has already issued a statement, confirming that the earthquake was felt «with maximum intensity III/IV (modified Mercalli scale)» in several municipalities in the Algarve.

Namely: Castro Marim, Faro, Loulé, Portimão and Vila Real de Santo António.

The shock was also felt, with the same intensity, in Cascais, Lisbon, Torres Vedras, Vila Franca de Xira, Almada, Setúbal and Sines.

Although with «less intensity» there are also records of the earthquake being felt in «Albufeira, Olhão and Silves», as well as Coimbra, Alenquer, Loures, Mafra, Oeiras, Sintra, Amadora, Odivelas, Santo Tirso, Vila Nova of Gaia, Santiago do Cacém, Seixal and Sesimbra.

So far, according to IPMA, there are no reports of the earthquake having caused “personal or material damage”.
