It was a night full of goals. Portugal beat Luxembourg 9-0, in the 6th round of group J qualifying for the 2024 European Championship, played this Monday, September 11th, at the Algarve Stadium.
The Algarve venue was packed to watch the national team play and the thousands of fans did not leave with disappointed expectations.
Portugal had a good performance, the best since Roberto Martínez was the coach.
The first goal came in the 12th minute, through Gonçalo Inácio, who made his debut scoring for the national team. The header came from a cross from Bruno Fernandes.
Playing at home, Algarve Gonçalo Ramos – born in Olhão – scored twice: in the 18th and 34th minutes. At halftime, the cupboard it was already 4-0, with Gonçalo Inácio also scoring twice (45+1′).
In the second half, another festival of goals. The 5-0 was scored by Jota (57 minutes) and the sixth by Ricardo Horta (67′).
The stands asked for more and the team would score three more, through Diogo Jota (77′), Bruno Fernandes (83′) and João Félix (88′).
It was a historic night in the Algarve: the team achieved the biggest victory ever. And Portugal remains leader in the qualifying group, one step away from the 2024 European Championship.
