Manuel Brito, founder of the Algarve publishing house «Sul, Sol e Sal» and the solar boat company Sun Concept, died today, aged 62, from lung cancer.
The news was given on the publisher's Facebook page, in a short post that says: «There is no other way to say it. Manuel Brito passed away today. After being diagnosed with lung cancer, the disease was swift and merciless».
Born in Olhão on May 8, 1961, Manuel Lázaro Oliveira de Brito lived much of his life in Lisbon, where he made a career in the area of financial auditing.
Graduated in Business Management, Instituto Superior de Línguas e Administração, he was a member of the Supervisory Board of Caixa Geral de Depósitos, manager of DFK & Associados, Society of Chartered Accountants, administrator of Brito Crisóstomo & Roque, Society of Chartered Accountants , among other positions in the area of financial auditing.
In 2015, he decided to return to his Algarve origins, having founded the publishing house «Sul, Sol e Sal», which had a cultural mission to fulfill. As said in an interview with Sul Informação in November 2016, «our objective is to publish works that value Algarve culture and heritage and make the external view of the Algarve reinforced and stop being as negative as I think it is, after having lived more than 35 years in Lisbon ».
«At this stage in my life, I thought I should return to the Algarve and give back to everything I learned and experienced here. The projects I have do not meet financial profitability criteria. I make a living from what I've worked on and with the comfort I consider appropriate. What I look for are projects that serve and value the Algarve. In other words, I'm not looking for activities that can make me richer, but rather that can give younger people examples of what a new and sustainable economy is,” Manuel Brito added.
His unexpected death leaves the Algarve poorer.
For now, there is still no information about the date and location of his funeral service.
