Portugal will send an Air Force plane to the city of Marrakesh, «to remove the Portuguese who want to return» from Morocco, shaken by an earthquake on Friday night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MNE) announced today.
Among the Portuguese who are in this city in Morocco, located around 80 kilometers from the place where this strong earthquake of magnitude 7 on the Richter scale occurred (it was felt in the Algarve and in several other parts of Portugal and Spain), there are if the presidents of the Chambers of Albufeira, Loulé and Silves and technicians from the three municipalities, as Sul Informação did it work.
In a note sent by the information and press office, the ministry informs that Portuguese citizens who wish to return to the country should contact the Consular Emergency Office (+351 217929714 / +351 961706472) or the Embassy of Portugal in Rabat (+212 674731819) .
According to the same note, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, will provide an update on Portugal's aid to Morocco and the Portuguese who are in the territory at 18:15 pm today, at the MNE headquarters, in Lisbon.
Previously, the MNE had reported that the Portuguese people it had contacted in Morocco “are doing well and have not reported any health problems or substantive material damage”.
Expressing “total solidarity with the Moroccan authorities and population”, Portuguese diplomacy assured that it is “permanently” monitoring the situation, maintaining contact “with Portuguese citizens in the country, particularly in the seismic epicenter area”.
The latest official toll from the earthquake that hit Morocco on Friday night rose to 1.037 deaths and 1.204 injuries, of which 721 were “in critical condition”.
According to the National Institute of Geophysics of Morocco, the earthquake reached magnitude 7,0 on the Richter scale and occurred in the Marrakesh region (north) at 23:11 pm, at a depth of eight kilometers.
The epicenter was in the town of Ighil, located about 80 kilometers southwest of Marrakesh.
The strong earthquake was felt in Portugal and Spain.
