World Food Day celebrated with session on “Water is life, Water is Food”

World Food Day has been celebrated every year, since 1981, on October 16th

The Algarve Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Fisheries (DRAPAlg) will organize, together with the University of Algarve (UAlg) and the UAlg Academic Association, a session on “Water is life, Water is Food” to celebrate, on October 16th, World Food Day, in the Grand Auditorium of the UAlg Gambelas Campus (Faro).

The importance of water for food production and life, the current situation of water reserves in the Algarve region, the assessment of the state of the art in terms of mitigation and adaptation, future challenges and the way in which younger people face and propose measures for more sustainable management of water resources.

These will be some of the topics covered throughout this session, which features the participation of speakers from various entities such as the National Institute of Agricultural and Veterinary Research, Instituto Superior de Engenharia and Dietetics and Nutrition course at UAlg, Portuguese Environment Agency, Faculty of Nutrition and Food Sciences at the University of Porto, Air-Centre and João de Deus and Tomás Cabreira School Groups, from Faro.

At the end of the session, there will be a debate around this sensitive topic, the main threats and challenges for our food security, our ecosystems and our well-being, as well as possible solutions towards greater resilience, involving representatives of students from UAlg and secondary schools in the Algarve and heads of regional entities such as CCDR Algarve, AMAL, DRAP Algarve and Águas do Algarve, followed by a display of regional products typical of the Mediterranean Diet.

World Food Day has been celebrated every year, since 1981, on October 16th. This day also corresponds to the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1945.
