Culatra hosts boat regatta made with materials found on the island

Within the scope of the multidisciplinary project “Waterworld”

A regatta of boats made by inhabitants of Culatra with materials collected on the island will take place tomorrow, Saturday, the 9th, in front of this barrier island.

This initiative is the culmination of the multidisciplinary project “Waterworld”, developed with the inhabitants of Culatra.

The regatta is the result of a workshop that aimed to «reflect on the rise in sea waters as a consequence of global warming and which crosses several areas and disciplines».

«The sea is a place of circulation, marked by commercial routes and invading fleets, lines of escape and refuges for all types of deserters. The water that rises comes to claim this role», according to the project's promoters.

The final result of Waterworld, a project that has been developed since the beginning of 2023, will be presented at the Convento de Santo António and at the Gema salt mines, in Loulé, in November 2023.

“Waterworld” involves the creation of objects, fictional texts, audiovisual pieces and micro-events with the community, which will accompany the creative process, which will be condensed as an audiovisual installation and online platform.
