Vuelta a Portugal: Delio Fernandez comes in 2nd in stage won by Whelan

Jesus del Pino continues to be the best “algarvian” in the race, occupying 9th place overall

Cyclist Delio Fernandez, from AP Hotels & Resorts/Tavira/SC Farense, finished the 9th stage of the Tour of Portugal, this Saturday, August 19th, in 2nd place, going from 19th to 16th in the general classification. 

The ninth and penultimate stage, which ended at the top of Senhora da Graça, was won by the Australian James Whelan (Glassdrive-Q8-Anicolor), but it is the Swiss Colin Stüssi (Voralberg) who keeps the yellow jersey.

The second “Algarvian” to finish this stage was Jesus del Pino. The cyclist from Aviludo – Louletano – Loulé Concelho arrived in 19th place and is in 9th place overall.

At the end of the 174,5 kilometers, between Paredes and the top of Senha da Graça, in Mondim de Basto, Whelan won in 4:32.46 hours, with 34 seconds less than the “Algarvian” Delio Fernández (AP Hotels&Resorts-Tavira-Farense ) and 36 than the Portuguese Hélder Gonçalves (Kelly-Simoldes-UDO).

Overall, Colin Stüssi is now 45 seconds ahead of Henrique Casimiro (Efapel), who rose to second place, overtaking Russian Artem Nych (Glassdrive-Q8-Anicolor), now third, at 1.00 minutes.

The 84th edition of the Tour of Portugal by bicycle ends this Sunday, August 20th, with a time trial of 18,2 kilometers in Vina do Castelo, with the finish line installed at the top of the Sanctuary of Santa Luzia.
