All mainland districts under orange warning until Wednesday due to heat

Temperature can occasionally reach 44°C in some places in the Alentejo and Tagus Valley

All districts on the mainland and the south coast of Madeira are under orange warning from today until Wednesday due to the forecast of hot weather, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

On the mainland, the districts of Bragança, Guarda, Castelo Branco, Portalegre, Évora, Beja, Setúbal and Faro are under orange warning from 1:00 am today until 23:00 on Wednesday due to the persistence of very high values of the maximum temperature.

The districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Vila Real, Porto, Aveiro, Viseu, Coimbra, Leiria, Santarém and Lisbon, which today are under yellow warning because of the hot weather, will change to orange at 00:00 on Tuesday and until 23:00 on Wednesday.

The IPMA also placed the south coast of Madeira under an orange warning until 23:00 on Tuesday due to hot weather, then changing to yellow until 23:00 on Wednesday.

The North Coast of Madeira and Porto Santo are also under yellow warning until 23:00 on Wednesday.

The orange warning indicates a meteorological situation of moderate to high risk and the yellow one is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities dependent on the meteorological situation.

The IPMA predicts an increase in temperature in the coming days, warning that the maximum may reach values above 40 degrees in some places.

According to the IPMA, “a generalized rise in the maximum temperature values is expected in the coming days, with values that between the 21st and 24th will be close to 40°C in the South and interior North and Center regions, and may occasionally reach 44°C C in some places in Alentejo and Vale do Tejo”.

On the North and Center coast, the maximum temperature will be lower, with values between 30 and 35°C, “being lower in the coastal strip”.

During the night, minimum temperatures will also be high, “with values above 20°C (tropical nights) in much of the territory, and may not even drop below 25°C in some places in the Algarve, Alentejo and Beira Interior” .

The IPMA predicts that temperatures will only begin to drop in a generalized way from Friday, "reaching normal values for the time of year on the weekend of the 26th and 27th".

The IPMA explains that the rise in temperature is related to “an anticyclonic ridge that extends from the Azores to Central Europe, promoting the transport of a mass of hot and dry air originating in North Africa over the territory of the continent”.
