Naval de Portimão becomes national champion of under-16 kayak polo

Final was played in Coimbra

Clube Naval de Portimão was crowned national kayak polo champion, in men's sub-16, after being the best team in the last phase of the National Kayak Polo Championship, organized by Clube Fluvial de Coimbra, with the support of the Portuguesa de Canoagem and Coimbra City Council, on the 12th and 13th of August.

Kayak polo is a sport that combines canoeing with water polo, in which the objective is to score goals on a goal suspended two meters above the surface of the water.

The competition brought together nine senior teams and seven Under-16 teams from various regions of the country and 100 canoeists.

The Clube Naval de Portimão team that secured the title of national champion is made up of athletes Diogo Durão, Miguel Fortes, Dinis Cosciuc, Martim Vilhena, Jayden Ferreira, Simão Vilhena and Nuno Roriz. Miguel Fortes was also the top under-16 scorer.

In this category, the podium was completed by the Clube de Kayak Polo da Barra and the Clube Náutico de Arcos de Valdevez.

In the seniors, Clube de Kayak Polo da Barra A lifted the national champion trophy, while Clube de Kayak Polo da Barra B won second place and Clube Fluvial de Coimbra closed the podium. The top scorer trophy was at home in the hands of athlete Sérgio Bento from Clube Fluvial de Coimbra.

The Kayak Polo project in Portimão is now three years old in August. Clube Naval de Portimão only has teams at the youth level – under-13, under-16 and under-21 levels -, «but the ambition is to start with a team at the senior level for next season», according to the club.
